COTS...

Due to the high development cost of Complex Electronic Hardware (CEH) also known as Airborne Electronic Hardware (AEH), manufacturers are turning to the use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) solutions. RTCA DO-254/ED-80 is largely not applicable for COTS but in the planning documentation the applicant is required to address COTS usage in the PHAC. This is typically handled via a COTS Design Assurance Process (DAP).

What is COTS...

We find it easier to define what COTS is not. If you are developing a new device, it is not COTS. If you are reusing a previously developed device not approved in an aerospace application, it is not COTS.

COTS is a device that you did not develop. Contact CEH Services for additional information on this subject matter.

How Do I Certify COTS...

Bring in our team that has the experience and know-how to address the usage of COTS correctly. This is not an easy task and unless you have a clear path forward then the likelihood exists that your engineering will confuse COTS with developed hardware. This has the potential to generate a tremendous amount of unnecessary work.

COTS Design Assurance Process...

CEH Services has experience with programs that used COTS and we know how to address it properly through the COTS DAP. Our suggestion is to free your engineering team to focus on what they do best which is design product and bring solutions to the market place fast. To accomplish this you need to bring our team onboard your program so that we can do what we do best which is develop a certification strategy for your program based on its uniqueness and work with your team so they will properly show compliance the first time.

We are here to help. CEH Services...see the difference!
