DO-254...Today, many companies continue to face the reality of a changing aerospace environment. The use of traditional custom micro-coded components, such as Programmable Logic Devices (PLD) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are experiencing an increasing challenge in obtaining civil regulatory approval. Equipment manufacturers are now required to specifically address these types of components, and others, beyond the traditional hardware development. Equipment manufacturers have an increased burden because these devices are subject to the standard of RTCA DO-254/ED-80.DO-254 identifies two classifications of design, Simple and Complex. There are very specific requirements and guidelines to determine whether a classifications of design meets the criteria to be declared Simple or Complex. A company engineer not experienced nor specifically trained in this area (a layperson) should not haphazardly make this declaration. Simple Development...Some classifications of design can be declared Simple. If so, then the data requirements for addressing compliance are greatly reduced because the compliance method is primarily based on testing and not process.CEH Services has successfully used the Simple approach to show compliance. Complex Development...If a classification of design is not Simple then it must be declared Complex.
